There is something about the land…

The Pu’uhonua Institute

Is a 5 acre lush retreat nestled on the East side of the Island of Hawaii. Sitting atop an abundant aquifer on the furthest east point of the Hilo/Hamakua coast amongst wild kalo, ancient banyans, flowering mimosas, native ferns, coconut, papaya, mango, banana and avocado trees.

The Pu’uhonua sits upon a secret cove (The Mo’o Pu’uwai) sacred to the Hawaiian Priestesses of classical times with direct ocean access where whales come to give birth and dolphins swim by most days. Facing due east, we are blessed with sunrises and moonrises over the Pacific Ocean everyday.

Graced with the presence of all main elemental teachers on the island lava rocks (Pohakus), spring water (Wai), ocean (Kai), rain (Ua), winds (Ka Makani), sun (Ka La), moon (Mahina) and fertile earth (‘Āina) — the Pu’uhonua serves as a sanctuary for nature-based learning and a temple for the wild untamed.
